Do real men send e-cards? Downsized dudes who used to lavish their ladies with expensive bouquets of roses may find themselves inclined to be a bit more tightfisted this Valentine’s Day. How can you trim the budget on Valentine’s Day yet still get some trim? Will the ladies be frisky, or will they become frigid and feign a headache if you don’t provide a floral tribute to their femininity? Virtual flowers, or free Valentine e-cards, fit the bill, and you won’t have to dip into your diminishing dollars.

A gallant gent cannot expect to get his groove on if he gives his Valentine a wilting bunchof cut-rate buds from the corner bodega. She will subconsciously equate the pathetic posies with a languid manhood and would toss both beau and bouquet out the window if the pane wasn’t covered with plastic sheeting to keep out the cold.

So how can the cheap Casanova, the low-budget lover, or the stingy stud guarantee he’s going to “raise his profile” this Valentine’s Day? Virtual roses, free Valentine e-cards, are the answer to his dating dilemma.

Iflowers.com offers an economical emotional rescue for all you recession-era Romeos. This Valentine’s Day, romance your cyber sweethearts with a single, perfect rose. Softly whisper seductive little nothings to all those lovely ladies on Plentyoffish.com with a pastel pink rose or declare your fiery passion to a multitude of MySpace minxes with a deep red rose. It’s a free service, so present as many roses as possible, and reap the rewards, perhaps simultaneous steamy chat sessions with a screenful of sexy sirens!

In the Valentine’s Day section at Imaginaryecards.com, you are sure to see free virtual flowers appropriate for your main squeeze, the sweethearts you are slipping it to on the side, and your saucy secretary, as well as gorgeous floral arrangements to email your long-suffering wife. Or maybe you can just shoot off a few flirtatious greetings to your “imaginary” cyber pals from the Craigslist personals. You might have been downsized, but with free Valentine e-cards you can get funky with all the foxes you’ve met on Facebook without breaking the bank.

A bed of velvety red petals, a bouquet of roses tied in a festive bow, a single pink blossom, and 1000 roses are among the superb selection of free Valentine e-cards at Virtualflorist.com. One of my personal favorites is a hand coming out of a box holding a rose, just like “Hand” on the Addams Family. Maybe your gal will give you a helping hand (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) if you play your cards, that is, your free Valentine e-cards, right. If you’re having trouble holding your own in these tough economic times, cultivate a budding romance on the cheap with an Internet Valentine card.

This Valentine’s Day, don’t just woo the wild webcam girls – - swallow your pride and cozy up to some hot-tempered harridans you can’t stand. A virtual bouquet sent to that hard-as-nails Human Resources head honcho might just keep you from being in the next round of layoffs.

(All the ladies who are reading this article know that it’s a farce. Listen up, all you pretty penny-pinchers! Naturally, these fabulous e-card sites aren’t just for the guys.

You will just love the assortment of beautiful hearts made of petals, rosebuds, and beautiful flowers at Imaginaryecards.com. All the other greeting card sites I’ve mentioned abound with pages and pages of gorgeous e-cards to brighten up someone’s day.

Bookmark these great resources for a wide variety of nature’s beauty, from photos of wildflowers to elegant arrangements, all of which you can mail your friends and family as free e-cards.

For more free floral e-cards, check out Garden.org, the National Gardening Association website, for an appealing assortment of photographs. Mississippians love their plants. Come early spring you’ll see hoards of home gardeners and flower lovers streaming into home depot and the other big box garden centers to stock up on their fertilizers and herbicides and lawn and garden gear. A good nursery will have a wide choice of these items, lots of tools for gardening and, of course, many trees, shrubs, vines and perennials in stock. The nursery items will come in during the early spring. Vegetable seedlings and early perennials begin arriving in late March or early April when they can be left outside. The best nurseries have lots of greenhouse space for browsing. Trees with balled roots, or trees in containers are available all year, since the dormant season is the time to plant these. Some nurseries around Jackson have all these items and even some landscaping and gardening services available as well.

As far as what they offer in plants, it’s as extensive as one could ask for–trees, water plants, succulants, perennials, annuals, shrubs, vines and groundcovers. Their Hydro-Mulch system can produce a beautiful lawn from just bare dirt in only days! It’s a fascinating process that costs less and produces a finer turf than typical drawn-out sowing and seeding methods. The prices are reasonable and the staff is put into horticultural training programs to better serve the public. A beautiful and really fun place to shop.

Relationships are hard. There are hundreds of small pitfalls and landmines out there just waiting to trip you and your honey up. It takes guts to make your love go the distance. You shouldn’t have to throw distance into the mix! Fortunately, when you do, online florists are there to help.

For many couples, however, long distance relationships aren’t a sometimes thing. Only getting to hear their voice every day and counting down until the next weekend, or school break, or work vacation is the daily reality for hundreds of couples across the U.S. (if not thousands-no one is really clear on the numbers). Whether you’re going to different schools, working different jobs, dealing with extended deployments or just juggling different shifts and struggling to make the drive from one house to another, long distance relationships are hard.

So what is it that online florists do that help long distance relationships last? It’s simple. There are a lot things that can cause long distance relationships to break, but they almost inevitably center around the idea that one partner has stopped thinking about the other and moved on with their life. It happens-when there’s someone you don’t see every day, and they’re not a part of your immediate, daily life it’s hard to keep that person foremost in your thoughts. That’s why it’s nice to be able to use the services offered by an online florist like 1-800-FLOWERS or Fresh Flowers Canada.

If you’ve been doing the long distance thing for a while you may already know the local florists and gift delivery services where your honey lives. If the relationship is new, you’ve never paid that much attention or you’ve got better things to do when the two of you are together than scope out local businesses, online florists can save your bacon. Many online florists operate on a wide scale, with offices and delivery capabilities in most urban and suburban areas. That means no matter you guys are, there’s probably an online florist that can make the delivery for you.

This is a great way to commemorate birthdays, anniversaries, apologies, major events and those “Thinking of you” moments until you can be together again.

Yes, it takes more than fresh flowers and cute boxes of candy to make long distance relationships last! Online florists are tools, not patches or glue. Here are some other tips from top relationship experts, counselors and couples that have done the long distance thing and made it work for what it takes to keep your long distance relationship together:

1) Communicate daily, either by phone, chat, email or text message. Send pictures and videos often.

2) Do things together, like watch the same tv shows and movies and read the same books. If you were living next to each other you wouldn’t spend your whole day on the phone, would you? This gives you something to talk about and makes you feel closer together.

3) Visit often.

4) Stay positive!

5) Don’t be controlling. You each have your own lives, and you have to be willing to let each other live them while you’re apart.

6) Don’t be jealous. No matter who they meet or who they’re hanging out with, they still love you best!

Making long distance relationships last is hard, but with some effort on both of your parts it can be a beautiful thing, and all the sweeter when you’re finally together again.

Good luck!

South Carolina was one of the United States’ original 13 colonies. Some of its flower gardens trace their history back centuries to these early days, and each dazzles the eyes with a profusion of colors that exemplify the state’s natural beauty. All of the gardens are open year-round but host the most colorful displays in the spring and summer. Dress lightly in the summer, since South Carolina’s summer heat can be humid.

Hatcher Garden & Woodland Reserve

The Hatcher Garden & Woodland Reserve first opened in 1969 in one of Spartanburg’s many abandoned cotton fields. The founders, Harold and Josephine Hatcher, gave their life savings to reclaim the overgrown cotton field–cotton farming ruined the soil and left it covered in weeds–and turn it into the lush public landscape that it is now, planting over 10,000 flowers, trees and shrubs on their own.

Discover several thematic spaces in the garden, such as a conifer garden and a butterfly garden. Flowers can be found throughout the area, from the perennial beds and medicinal plant garden near the Upper Pond, to the shady woodland garden on the eastern edge of the area.

Admission is free, as of March 2010. The gardens are approximately 2 miles outside of the center of downtown Spartanburg, and are just a mile from the Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport.

South Carolina Botanical Garden

Find the South Carolina Botanical Garden on the grounds of Clemson University. Expect to spend several hours here, with miles of nature trails and paved walkways taking you through 295 acres of flower gardens, lush forests and open fields. Example areas of interest include a bog garden, a wildflower meadow often frequented by butterflies, a hydrangea garden, and an American Hosta Society-certified display garden.

Look for several historic buildings nestled in the gardens. The Hanover House was built in 1716 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hunt Cabin is a Civil War-era log cabin originally built in Seneca but was bought by the Clemson University Class of 1915 for $35 to save it from being demolished. It was moved into the gardens in 1955. Both are open for tours.

Admission is free, and entrance to the on-site Fran Hanson Discovery Center and art galleries is also free, as of March 2010. The gardens are approximately four miles from the Oconee County Regional Airport and a little over two hours’ driving northeast of Atlanta, Georgia.

Swan Lake Iris Gardens

Swan Lake Iris Gardens was once a private fishing lake whose owner, Hamilton Bland, had a penchant for the Japanese iris flower. The wealthy businessman sent for advice from horticulturists from around North America to help establish his hobby garden. It was given to the city of Sumter in 1938 after Bland died and now hosts 100+ acres of Japanese irises, plus additional floral plantings including azaleas, day lilies and camellias.

Visit during May through June to see the thousands of iris plants in all their glory. As its name suggests, dozens of swans dot the landscape; the park says it’s the only public U.S. park to house all eight swan species. Bring crackers or bread to feed the swans and the other on-site waterfowl, such as mallard ducks and Canada geese, but practice caution when visiting in the early spring as they are often territorial during this mating time.

Admission is free, as of March 2010. The gardens are approximately 2 miles from downtown Sumter and 8 miles from Sumter Municipal Airport.

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

Experience a fusion of Charleston’s history and vibrant flower gardens at the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, which bills itself as America’s oldest public gardens with an establishment date of 1676. It was the winner of the 2010 Heritage Tourism Award from the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation for the plantation’s exhibits on slave cabins.

Flowers like azaleas–the organization is planning on building North America’s most comprehensive collection of these flowers–and daffodils bloom all year, but visitors in the spring will be greeted with the plantation’s most colorful displays. Some of the flower plantings have been in existence for over three centuries. Highlights include one of America’s largest collections of ancient camellias, most which cannot be found anywhere else, and a swamp garden with alligators.

Keep an eye out for slave cabins on the grounds. The cabins are open for tours and have been restored with furniture and vegetable gardens. Each cabin houses exhibits detailing important dates in the United States’ trek toward equality, including the Civil War and the Reconstruction period, both which hit South Carolina hard.

General admission is $15 for adults, $10 for children ages 6 through 12, and free for children ages 5 and under, as of March 2010. This gives you access to the flower gardens. Attractions like the slavery exhibits cost extra. The gardens are approximately 25 minutes’ driving from both downtown Charleston and the Charleston AFB/International Airport.
